Digitech RP255 vs Zoom G2.1nu: Head to Head

Ok, so we’ve run down the main features, strengths, and weaknesses of both the Digitech RP255 and Zoom G2.1nu. So what’s the verdict?

As usual, it really all depends on the in tended application. If you live for high gain palm muted madness and screaming pinched harmonics; the Zoom G2.1nu wins by a mile. That’s not to say the RP255 isn’t capable of good high gain tones, but the G2.1nu just elevates it to another level. On the other hand, if you get your kicks from the more moderate breakup of tube sweating, I feel the Digitech RP255 is the better choice.

From an effects standpoint it’s a bit of a toss up based on what turns you on. Zoom has painfully omitted a rotary speaker emulation but includes the unique ability to stack delay (including a multitap and reverse) and has some excellent implementation of special effects. Digitech has excluded a multitap delay, something they basically built their reputation upon back in the 80’s, but you do get a great emulation of their Whammy and some very well modeled vintage effects including a most excellent rotary speaker emulation. And don’t forget the 20 second looper of the RP255…

For those who prefer deep programming, the Digitech claims victory offering up to five parameters on some effects modeling the actual control layout of vintage effects. On the other hand, those who don’t like tweaking parameters for hours will enjoy the stripped down approach of Zoom. Also, Zoom’s ability to program time based effects (modulation, delay) based on rhythmic patterns relative to the tap tempo is a real nice touch.

Hey good reviews! I recently bought the G2.1Nu. Mind sharing you're patches on them? The one you demoed in this review and some other special ones that you like. They all sound good! Thanks in advance! Cheers

Sorry, but I no longer have the unit. That said, there's no better resource for programming a multi-fx than your ears. Good luck and have fun!
