Alright, if you've never heard David Grissom, then you don't know what you've been missing! He's a studio cat/sideman who just oozes tones from every orifice. Recently, I stumbled across an absolutely incredible vid of him on YouTube from a PRS roadshow demoing the new PRS amps. I was so inspired by his clip, that I wanted to see if I could get anywhere near his vibe with my trusty Digitech RP500.
So I picked up my PRS SE Singlecut and punched up one of my go to patches which features the DigiSpank model into the ALT 4X12 cabinet (I have 3 patches using this amp set up exactly the same but with different mod effects: tremolo, chorus, and Whammy). [ED note: Originally I misstated the cab of the Digi Chunk. The actual cab eard in the recording the ALT 4X12] I typically have these patches set up with the TS808 drive model for some heathy drive and then additionally boosted using the DigiComp when I want a slightly sagier feel or some more sustain (I haven't been playing with a ton of gain live). So first up was getting some more gain up front.
After auditioning all the pedals in the unit, I felt the Redline drive was the best option. The Redline is based on a modified Tubescreamer with a fuller low end and nearly double the gain. The real magic of this pedal model is how dynamically responsive it is allowing a good amount of attack though even when running it very saturated. With that decision made, I tweaked my DigiComp settings a bit to compensate for the redline's voicing.
Finally, to add some reverb to the mix. Live, I don't use any reverb, but as the goal of this patch is a direct recording I selected the EMT Plate emulation as to me it really defines what I like about a good reverb: you can dial in a medium long tail but mix it a bit lower and get a nice ambience without it being too obvious and in your face.
And voila! Instant Dave Grissom...err...well not really...but cool none the less. I initially posted this in a couple forums to demonstrate how effective a treble bleed circuit can be (especially when coupled to some treble boosting before an amp or amp model in our case), but the clip has seemingly taken on a bit of life on its own. For those who've asked, the patch is linked below the clip.
