Music Instrument Museum Opens in Phoenix

Friday, April 30, 2010| by Will Chen

Featuring everything from tribal instruments of Congo to Daisy Rock’s original star-shaped electric guitar prototype, the recently opened Music Instrument Museum is promising a diverse collection of over 12,000 instruments from nearly 200 countries and territories around the world with a goal to acquire instruments used for folk and tribal occasions wherever possible. The $250 million, 190,000 square-foot, two_story facility sits on 20 acres at Tatum Boulevard near the Mayo Clinic Hospital. In addition to it's collection, the museum will also offer rotating special exhibits such as the Steinway piano on which John Lennon wrote Imagine and guitars owned by Eric Clapton and George Benson. On the one hand, it sounds like the sort of place I could schedule a vacation around.

But on the other, it's a kinda commercialized version of a place that's been around for decades, & has been the center of more than a few outings of the Guild of American Luthiers. (Also in South Dakota which, while a little harder to get to, is a LO(T cheaper for lodging & food). Check out the National Music Museum:
