A Note on Individuality...

Saturday, August 29, 2009| by Will Chen

I frequent quite a few guitar oriented forums and more and more I see a theme of follow the leader in which many people seem to band together propagating many musical urban legends. While the more experienced players tend to take these things with a grain of salt, many younger and less experienced players are very impressionable and fall victim to these half truths and end up spending way too much time and money grail chasing.

To all I encourage you to keep an open mind and play as much gear as you possibly can. More often than not you’ll find that what you’ve been told to be true simply isn’t and in no area is the old adage “one man’s trash is another’s treasure” more true than the subjective opinions on what constitutes good tone...

It has taken me a long time to reach a point where I wasn't cripplingly "brand conscious" of my gear.  Really, it wasn't a matter of brand consciousness as it was self-consciousness and having the guts to get up there with a great instrument that just happened to be a budget brand.  If you look back, the gear that is now iconic is that way because some brave soul took a stand and made it their own.  Both the Strat and the Les Paul were not originally well received, if my understanding of history is correct.  So, yeah, I see the same forces that tell you "you are what you buy" at work in the guitar world as much as in any other market, and I definitely don't agree with that sentiment.
