Last night, I caught a great new comedy on the Independent Film Channel which I encourage every musician to watch. The show is called Z Rock and follows the exploits of a band with dual personalities. By night they are Z02, a hard driving rock trio with a sound slightly reminiscent of later 80's rock with bluesy roots. By day they are the Z Brothers, a kid's party band in high demand.
The performances feel real because they are real; the show's stars are playing themselves. Z Rock is loosely based on the real life experiences of brothers Paulie Z and David Z, lifelong friend Joey Cassata and their band Z02. Watching the show, you will no doubt feel like you know these guys. Paulie, the lead singer and guitarist is the business man of the bunch while David handles the bass and is always chasing the girls. Joey provides the “ball busting” and drumming duties.
The show’s direction is creative combining first person “Behind the Music” styled interview segments with music video style performance clips and situational comedy. Additionally, Z Rock features many cameo appearances of celebrities and rock stars parodying themselves.
New episodes air Sunday nights at 11:30 EST.
