Can a budget mic compare with the big boys?

GLS Audio's ES58 is a ball-style dynamic microphone which is exclusively distributed by Orange County Speaker. The unit ships in a plain white box and does not include any literature. While simple mics such as these don’t really require an operations manual, you do miss out on the frequency response chart and usage guides (which often include simple mic techniques) offered by the big manufacturers. Also, there is no warranty documentation. Luckily, the unit feels extremely solid and I'm sure could take a beating without ill consequence.

Tonally, the ES58 compares favorably with much more expensive units and has the characteristic gentle roll off of the high-end and proximity effect of similarly designed dynamic microphones. The unit handled the high SPLs of a close miced cranked guitar amp and was sensitive enough to use as a room mic. Don't let the low price fool you; this mic is a good choice for anyone needing a utility microphone for home recording or a rugged stage mic.
